VERONA and the LAKE GARDA - art, culture and a charming lake

Recently awarded the status of a "World Heritage Site", Verona has delighted painters, poets, travellers and celebrities for centuries. A walk through its narrow streets allows you to get in touch with its varied and fascinating past: traces of its splendid Roman origins, its prevailing medieval structure, its magnificent Renaissance palaces as well as the impressive fortifications which protect it. Shaped by the last Ice Age, Lake Garda has always fascinated its visitors. Its shade of sky-blue and the varied landscape which surrounds it has made it unforgettable.

VERONA
A first glimpse of the city is love at first sight, and will entice you to come back and explore it thoroughly. For the past two thousand years and more, the city walls enclose a unique and breathtaking range of art-works and monuments. Verona is a work of art in itself: a fascinating cross-roads of historical periods and cultures (both classical and Germanic), a blend of both Nordic and "Mediterranean" influences; the city is at the same time both ancient and modern. As far as the quality and the preservation of its Roman antiquities are concerned, Verona is second only to Rome. The Arena, built in the first half of the 1st century A.D., is the third largest amphitheatre in Italy, after the Colosseum and the amphitheatre of Capua.

VALPOLICELLA
More than a valley, Valpolicella is a series of valleys in fan shape running north-south above Verona. It has an excellent climate, rolling countryside and many water courses. In Valpolicella vineyards are a characteristic feature of the region. In Roman times, the cultivation of grapevines was ample and diffuse, as was the intensification of the refinement and commerce of wine. The Amarone, “passito” wine made from dried grapes, is produced according to a method known since ancient times that requires withering of the grapes on grids. This results in very concentrated sugars and a resulting full-bodied, high alcohol wine. The drying also results in a very earthy taste. Amarones are normally consumed between 10 and 15 years.

LAKE GARDA
Lake Garda is the biggest and the most typical of all of the pre-alpine lakes. It was celebrated by one of the most illustrious Roman poets, Catullus. Its particular shade of sky-blue and the varied landscape which surrounds it has made it unforgettable. The southern section of the lake, embraced by the gentle slopes of the Riviera of Olives, looks decidedly Mediterranean, however, just a few kilometres north where Monte Baldo rises above it, it completely changes character and turns into a narrow fiord. Rocks and steep cliffs surmounted by castles and ancient churches steeped in history stand guard over suggestive and graceful little ports. Olive-trees and lemons have been cultivated here since Roman times.

SIRMIONE
The gem of all the penisulas. The details have faded away in the wake of time, but the Roman spirit still lives in Catullus' Villa and Catullus' Grotte, the original purpose of which is a secret of lake Garda. The Romans had built two castles, two harbours, a settlement and the gigantic villa that rises on rocks and powerfully towers on the lake. The eventful history of the Penisula has had many hights and lows, but Sirmione has never lost its magic. Be they Romans or Cimbrians, Goths or Avars, Scaligers or Venetians, all where touched by its fabulous charm. The Scaligers built on the main harbour their famous fortress: a charming, graceful yet strong and imposing bultwark, one of the most beautiful buildings in the word.

FERRARA and RAVENNA - castles and mosaics

Ferrara still has the atmosphere of the past, which blends in harmoniously with the lively atmosphere of the present. The age of splendour of the Estense court has left indelible signs everywhere. Ravenna is a city of ancient origins, a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the first order. In its glorious past, it was capital three times between the 5th and 8th centuries; Ravenna is the city of mosaic art which did not originate here but found its highest form of expression in a mixture of symbolism and realism, Roman and Byzantine influences.

FERRARA
Ferrara's most famous image is certainly that of its grand Renaissance, the age of splendour of the Estense court, which has left indelible signs everywhere. From 1995 on, UNESCO has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a wonderful example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact. The town planning criteria expressed in Ferrara had a deep influence on the progress of town planning in the following centuries. The most prominent building is the square Castello Estense, in the centre of the town, a brick building surrounded by a moat, with four towers. It was built after 1385 and partly restored in 1554.

CLASSE
The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe is an important monument of Byzantine art in Italy. It is an outstanding example of the early Christian basilica in its purity and simplicity of its design and use of space and in the sumptuous nature of its decoration. When the basilica was built 1500 years ago it was on the seashore. The imposing architecture of the basilica ground plan, which stands today in the country just outside Ravenna, was originally intended to stand on the Adriatic coast where it was built but which is now a few kilometres away. In fact it is right next to the Basilica that we find the extensive archaeological area of the ancient city of Classe, home of the Roman fleet.

RAVENNA
Ravenna is a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the highest order, a city with ancient origins and a glorious past and capital three times, of the Western Roman Empire, of King Theodoric of the Goths and of the Byzantine Empire in Europe. The basilicas and baptisteries of the city contain the richest heritage of mosaics dating from the 5th and 6th centuries and eight historic buildings included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. It is the city that guards the remains of Dante and keeps alive the memory of the great Italian poet with important cultural events. Today Ravenna is a civil and hospitable city. Take the time to walk around, the town is full of the most charming surprises.

POMPOSA
One of the most appealing Italian churches of the period (Romanesque) is the Abbey of Pomposa, begun in the late ninth century on marshy land and extended some 26 feet in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The interior of the three-aisle abbey is architecturally simple, with planar, almost shaved stone wall, topped by a wood-truss roof. The raised sanctuary level in the apse is the only structural accent. This purposeful simplicity provides the perfect background for the extraordinary frescoes that cover almost all available wall space. Painted in the 1350s by Iacopo da Bologna, they combine medieval primitiveness with Byzantine overtones accents from nearby Ravenna.

DOLOMITES
A magic that has been repeating itself for millions of years. When day gives way to evening's first shadows, it casts an enchanting spell. Pink rock faces, like the colour of the legend. And in that moment, in harmony between light and dark, nature's rays caress the peaks, needles, towers, bastions and ancient cliffs, kissing them like a dream, awakening emotions that warm both heart and memories. This is what most people who have been in the presence of these gigantic rock formations say. Compared to other mountains: brighter, more colorful, more monumental, and seeming to be architecturally inspired. Formed 200 millions years ago out of the primeval ocean, today they reach 3,300 metres into the sky.

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO
There is no lens but that of human eye that can catch and truly comprehend the stark grandeur of the Dolomites of Cortina d'Ampezzo, and even that fine instrument can sometimes be overwhelmed by the majesty of Cortina's compelling surroundings. The colors of the landscape change constantly as the sun moves across the sky, the azure lakes reflect the hard-edged peacks. Cortina is known as the "Queen of the Dolomites" since it is in the heart of the wonderful Dolomites. The town is famous for its lively international atmosphere, its fashionable shops, its excellent restaurants, in winter for its incomparable skiing, in summer for its mountain climbing and hiking.

MISURINA
Misurina is a small enchanting village a short distance from the feet of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Known throughout the world as the Pearl of the Dolomites, Misurina is a popular winter destination for downhill and cross country skiing while in summer it offers hiking, climbing and its lovely natural lake. Lake Misurina is enveloped by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are amongst the most beautiful and recognizable mountains in the Dolomites, the Alps and the World. In the Great War this area of the Alps echoed with gunfire and would become, without doubt, the most surrealistic battlefield in history.

PASSO FALZAREGO and LAGAZUOI
The Falzarego Pass is certainly an earthly Paradise! One can not aptly describe a view like that ! It is all a picture; as if every part was purposely what it is, here rocky, here green, here snowy, with summits, valleys, ravines and villages and even a partly ruined castle to form a whole such as an artist or poet would revel in. Refuge Lagazuoi (9,029 feet high) is on the peak of Mount Lagazuoi above the Falzarego Pass. The incredible view of the Dolomite peaks from its terrace is famous to warrant mentions in many publications. Easy to reach by taking the Lagazuoi cable car, it is a perfect base for visiting the restored tunnels, trenches and emplacements of the open air museum of the Great War.

PADOVA, VICENZA and PALLADIO

Andrea Palladio is often described as the most influential, and most copied, architect in the Western world. Drawing inspiration from classical architecture, he created carefully proportioned, pedimented buildings that became models for stately homes and government buildings in Europe and America. Palladio designed many churches, villas, and palaces, especially in Venice, Vicenza and the surrounding area. The interior design of each Villa was to be as wonderful, if not more so than the exterior, therefore some famous contemporary artists were commissioned to paint frescoes in the principal salons. A number of Palladio's works are protected as part of the World Heritage Site Palladian Villas of the Veneto.

AQUILEIA
Aquileia, one of the most interesting archeological sites in Italy, is located in the southern part of the Friulian plain, close to the wide Lagoon of Grado. From the Augustian Age onwards , the town became an important center of commercial exchanges between the Danubian regions and the Mediterranean basin, thanks to its favourable geographic location. The population living within the boundary walls was cosmopolitan and it is presumed to have come to 100,000 inhabitants by the end of the Imperial era; as a matter of fact Aquileia was considered on of the largest cities of the Roman Empire. The archaeological remains easily found everywhere, bear witness of its illustrious past.

GRADO
Grado and the Lagoon are an original landscape, artistic and anthropological microcosm within the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia. The isle of Grado was the first port for the ancient navigators who coming from the Adriatic sea used to sail up the lagoon and then the river Natissa till Aquileia. Grado was already famous and Venice didn’t exist yet. With over 12 thousands hectares land and 25 kilometres coastline the lagoon of Grado extends towards west as far as the lagoon of Marano and is the most beautiful in the whole Mediterranean. A tangle of canals and valleys, among the slimes, covered with reeds and bushes. A place of no time, reign of the water, wind and silence.

GROTTA GIGANTE
The Giant cave is the biggest tourist cave in the world and has been opened to the public since 1908. The enormous hall is 107 metres high, 280 metres long and 65 metres large putting it in the Guinness Book of Records. A confortable and steep path and a suggestive electric lighting allew a pleasant visit. The tourist can have a look at the wonderful and charming underground world represented by the caves and at the rich calcite concretions, the highest of which is no less than 12 metres high. The cave contains many large stalactites and stalagmites many of exceptional beauty. A feature of the stalagmites is their "dish-pile" appearance, formed by water dropping from up to 80 meters above.
